3 Steps To Ensure Your Tires Are Safe

Tire failure is a key cause of accidents and ensuing insurance claims. Tires generally receive more wear and tear than other areas of a vehicle. They must endure incredible force. And, they must remain in excellent working condition to keep the vehicle moving.

It’s important to check your tires to keep your family safe. You should do this every time you get into a car.

But, what should you be looking for? How do you know your tires are safe?

Here a few key things to keep in mind.

#1: Know The Signs Of Tire Wear
Many tires fail due to common wear and tear. Most auto insurance policies don’t cover tire wear. With that in mind, you should seek out a mechanic if you notice any of the following issues:

  • Significant vibrations when driving.

  • The vehicle pulling to one side. (This indicates poor alignment.)

  • Warning lights signaling the tires are inflated above or below recommended amount.

These situations might indicate developing or imminent damage to the car. It’s important to get them corrected immediately.

#2: Inspect Your Tires
A close inspection of your tires can give you an indication of wear. Check your tires any type of uneven wear and tear every time you get ready to drive. Also, check for any bulges or nails in the tire in it. Additionally, you’ll want to determine the depth of the tread. Place a penny into the tread with the head facing downward. If you can see the top of the head, the tire treads are too thin. This means the tires will need to be replaced.

#3: Have Your Tires Maintained
Have your technician look at your tires every time you take it in for an oil change. They can help determine the condition of the tires, as well as that of your alignment. If need be, they can replace, realign or rotate your tires. These actions can make your vehicle, so be sure to follow any maintenance recommendations they might make. If you do decide to purchase new tires, be sure you invest in tires designed for your vehicle and the weather conditions.

These steps help ensure you can avoid tire-related accidents. While some of these accidents might be covered under your auto insurance policy, it’s better to avoid them through attention to detail and preventative maintenance.
